Hello. An idea I've got for a Threadless Loves competition. Borrowing the concept from one of my previous designs - just thought I'd put it out there before I ink it incase anyone thinks anything needs to be done.



FYI, the Rhino, top left is a flat 'scenery' Rhino. No Rhinos were hurt in the making of this design.

I obviously don't expect anyone to want this to be submitted quite yet.

I think that this is a great design, I am excited to see colors, etc.

how about if you have a baby rhino being aimed at

you might want to adjust the mock-rhino a smidge and show the wood brace behind it to make that more obvious to the viewer - although color may help there without adjusting it

Ok, I got a chance to ink it. Now I need to decide whether or not to but in that tree - top centre, and whether to remove the large bush infront of the decoy rhino. Opinions valued!

Wow! this looks really promissing, it's funny and well executed. I'd take the bush away and the tree, there is already a lot of elements and i don't think they ad anything to the scene. Can't wait to see the develpment of this!

your line art is great. I'm not that smooth with mine. :-) I'm with Pet about the plants. However it would really depend on what color you see this on. If you see a green background then the line art for the plants would be good as a transparency so they add the sense of plane that will be lost without the grid lines. But if you were going to color the plants in at the end then I'd recommend against them. However it might be foolish to remove them so early on. I'd loose the fluffy one right next to the rhino regardless though.



Just sayin. :-) I can't wait for this one.

Oh and you should go peek at my newest blog thread. I could use some help picking my next project.

I'm going to proceed sans plant-life, but will try to use shadow to create the flat, serengeti-at-low-sun feel. Also - could help in the concept if the decoy Rhino was slightly silhouetted to the would-be poachers.

So I guess Chapter two of your book will be on development of an idea. Man you've got some sketching and line work skills, I can't wait to watch this concept to completion. I know someone else asked but what do you seeing the placement being?

Centre on the chest. It's a classic, I'm sure you'll agree. I don't know to be honest. Maybe I'll put that to the public, but Ill probably end up going for the missionary position of t-shirt placements.

The only other option I could see besides centering would be to make the herd centered and the decoy up on the shoulder.

Hmm... interesting. Well, I promise I'll play around with it nearer the time and the people will have their voice.

i like it, but dont make the design big on the shirt, please! OHHH! i just had an idea, what if you wrapped it around the side of the shirt? so on the bottom on the from of the shirt it is the guys shooting the fake rhino, and then hiding around the other side are the real rhinos getting ready to pounce? do rhinos pounce? anywho, that might be fun! i do really like the direction you are going and i would love to buy that sketch, its so nice.

awesome drawing on the rhinos!!! (this is probably why im too scared of perspective + background) but the vehicle + decoy rhino and the actual rhinos seem to be on a different perspective.. but eh its too late to give that critique now.. and i know you probably worked like nuts on the thing given you even had a grid.. anyway, good luck! very promising sub! :)

I think you should add the foliage back. Looks a little empty without.

Ueno, it's a trick caused by the color. Once he shades it and creates the plane it should pan out.

Wow. I had the exact same idea fot the loves contest. Love the design though.

Back by popular demand - FOLIAGE! And some rocks to make the terrain a bit more interesting. I've now used the allocated 5 colours, and quickly slapped some crude shading on. Still quite a bit to go, but was throwning it back out to see what people think of the added element. Your comments are appreciated. Cheers!

Yeah, The Ending - thats where the canvas ended before I saved it as the correct size gif. This is just a very rough shade.

Cheers babyape. I need somehelp though to decide whether I should submit it for a Loves Threadless comp, or just the ongoing comp. The Josh Ritter Loves kinda works - the theme being 'The Animal Years'. The Big Buck Hunter Loves is 'The Great American Hunter' - which works, but might be more appropriate with a star spangled banner hanging off the back of the Jeep, as there are not many Rhinos in the States. Apparently. Your feedback is required and very welcome!

The awesomeness. Although the rhinos don't really look like they're poised to strike, which might be an improvement. Maybe you could draw one stomping the ground with one of his front paws?

hey i'm surprised you have not submitted this yet, maybe you are a perfectionist but it would be a $5 for me as it is. the rhinos as they are, are great and understated in a foreboding way which works well. get it subbed and you'll be a definite winner, and I think I'll have two, one for me and one for my brother in law in zimbabwe who's had a few scrapes with wildlife himself.

Hi Fatheed. please don't delete this because I want to show someone your awesome, awesome sketch. I just had a discussion with some illustration friends about how I think people are missing out becuase they don't work their illustrations out in detail on paper first —and do a crappy sketch thinking they can use computer magic to make it better. I think if the sketch you make isnt a 5$ to begin with— then its probably not going to be a $5. Your sketch was a $5.

And you're spot on. Pencil and paper is king. The rest is easy if you do the first bit right.

i'm totally there with ya on the sketch-before-you-wrok thang, but there are folks on here (d3d for example) who do awesome work without a paper and pencil sketch. i dunno how he does it, but his stuff rocks too.

I think glennz also mentioned that he launches straight into illustrator. Great if you can do it - but it does produce something quite different from a design that began it's life on a piece of paper.

about the five rhinos... they need to have footsteps at their back, have you noticed this, anyway i gave this an awesome :)

i like it, but I like the designs to be slightly bigger on the tshirt so we can really see on second glance that the rhino is a cut-out!

This is an awesome shirt on it's own, but when you can also see how it was made it makes it that much cooler. Kind of the opposite effect from magicians revealing their tricks...
