your attempts at fluffy fur i think make it look a little pixalated. I would potentially suggest changing it... just a thought. Good idea overall though!

donlope01 on Jun 19 '09
I like the drawing and the idea.
I'm not sure about the colours... and the arm of the panda is too thin. |
slydex on Jun 19 '09
Yes, something wrong with this panda anatomy. Less larger on the shirt too :)
ricktuma on Jun 19 '09
I've gotta say that the wooden shoes are wonderful! Nice evolution of the design between 1 and this latest. Overall I think you are about done and ready to submit this puppy, er, panda.
Looking back through previous comments I agree with the comment about the left eye (from our viewpoint, the right) looking vaguely like a shinner (black eye). If it's on purpose: keep it, otherwise it's the only flaw in a great illustration. |
ricktuma on Jun 19 '09
donlope01 has a point about the arm! Not sure why I overlooked that. Colors are fine for me and feel just right for the topic - it will be a strong image, for sure!

change the pandas color from red to blue. make the hat a little bigger too, and fill out his back more (it kinda looks like he's a hunchback).
Like the graphic but it's not really telling a story, not that it needs to, but it looks like something is going on. Looks like he's avoiding someone on his left who's trying to eat his rice, might be a great idea to add another panda there or something else to drive the story of the shirt.
Graphic should be a little smaller, maybe a red tee for Red China. |
you should change the title too, pandas are from china ;-)
china and japan have a very sorted history and it would be deeply offensive to combine the two elements.

Ars Fera on Jun 19 '09
Thanks for the comment on my critique!
I think you could play around with some color options and placement. I don't like those little stars on his cheek either.. they're sort of random. And I agree with the arm being a little thin, I would make it a lot thicker |
Imie on Jun 19 '09
I think the design is cool, the only thing I'd say needs change is the shadow of the panda, I don't know if its just me but it seems a little odd.
But I love the colors and design, if you can get that shadow right I will vote for you, cool name too! Wish you the best of luck! Please check my bulldog bully |
Tigerbill on Jun 19 '09
Really strong design. I like it!
Keep the colours-- the red and white is like the Japanese flag right? Agree with the others about the arm-- didn't notice it at first though. If you've got a bit of time check out the latest version of my design |
Ike Lawliet on Jun 19 '09
Yea, the colors are supposed to be off of the flag. I know Pandas are from China, but this is supposed to be a "what if" for a Panda that lived in Japan. I'll definitely scoot the arm over and probably make it larger, as well as the hat, but does anyone else have advice about the colors without removing the red and white? Perhaps lower saturation red?
Also, the comment about the yellow shirt is true, I'll see what else it klooks good on. |
Nice.s.t.e.e. on Jun 19 '09
i would get rid of the asterisks on its face...

Ike Lawliet on Jun 19 '09
The symbols on the cheeks are supposed to be similar to the Japanese rising sun, but stylized a little cuter. Perhaps if the symbol was more clear?
JanDeA on Jun 20 '09
Love the title and the panda is great. The left Geta looks a little off I think the bottom wooden block just needs a little perspective work. It might be the shadow that is distorting it. I love the wood grain!! His left side of his face at the bottom seems a little pointy might need rounded just a little bit. His rt. eye needs some work. The left eye is great maybe you could just copy and reflect that eye and use it for the rt. as well. The black lines around the eyes need to be connected. The shadow to the rt. is cutting him off I think we need to see a little more of his backside and less of the shadow. Love the symbols on the checks!! This is such a wonderful piece and I think people could fall in love with this Panda on a shirt. Very creative and nice job.

haha funny idea. but the black thing on the panda's back it's kinda bothering me. What is that, a shadow? if it's yes maybe you can make it more soft cause the black come up to strong i feel. Good job :D

Aren't Panda's from China?? I really wouldn't know--my info comes from Kung-Fu Panda. Is there a way to make it look more like an art print from Japan?--w/ a watercolor look. Or a rice-paper texture? I don't know if that was helpful...
Thanks for commenting on mine.:) |
Ichi_Moore on Jun 25 '09
It's left leg looks awkward. Also, I wouldn't use that dark a black for a shadow.
Tigerbill on Jun 25 '09
I'm still really digging this design. The fattened arm looks much better.
I don't mind the bright colours-- if it were me though I would go for more of a mustard colour and mute the red and black. Maybe 70-80% of what it is now. Still pretty awesome. It'd be great if you could score my first submission! |
donlope01 on Jun 25 '09
It's better for the arm.
Another shadow is bothering me... continuing on the panda belly and thus the panda belly does not look correct. The round shape of it should continue down to its leg. Can you help me on my design? Distance Love |
Ike Lawliet on Jun 25 '09
Good point about muting the colors, I'll do that in the next version, especially on the shadow. Also, yeah, Pandas are from China. This is sort of a joke- it's a Japan-da. Also, I like the idea of filtering it to look like an ukiyo-e print, or like it's on rice paper, I'll try that too. Thanks, all!

For this version, I lowered the saturation of all of the colors. I also gave each color unique shading, rather than black for everything, and removed most of the white. This makes the image a lot calmer and less contrasting overall, so it's easier to look at. The sandals are also re-drawn to be less chunky.
One possibility would be to make it look aged, like on rice-paper as someone suggested. What do you all think of that idea? Comments and critiques please! |
ndough on Jun 25 '09
yes it is too big on placement, maybe sizing a little will make a good character and also what do you think about add some background, jejeje.
help me out too, for ice cream |
Knijper on Jun 25 '09
Nice one!
A definate improvement from the earlier versions. This one is a lot brighter, due to the new shading. I'm not sure about the textures on it's shoes (sorry, don't know how these are called..). It's the only place in the design where you use a full texture, so it doesn't fit in that well I think. |

Very cute and cuddly. For some reason I don't get the asteriks on his cheeks. Everything else is drawn out but that seems like a shape brush or predesigned software shape. Maybe give him different cheek shading. I think he is so cute. I love the color and drawing, the shading is good so I don't see anything else to change. Make me wanna pinch his cheeks! : )

These changes were fine tuning. I removed the texture on his sandals to that they don't stand out, and added and outline to the rice for the same reason. I also hand drew the cheek suns, so that they were a little imperfect, and would better match the rest of the panda. The biggest change is the panda is now a lot smaller on the shirt.
I tried other cheek designs, but I felt that the sun, based on the rising sun of Japan, looked best. I also felt that a background took away from the panda, himself. In case this is your first time seeing this, this is how a panda would look if he came from Japan! Comments and critiques, please! Do you think this is ready for submission? |
Ike Lawliet on Jun 26 '09
Also, for when I submit this, do you all think I should use the above model wearing my shirt, or an image of myself? An nice image of myself may look more unique, instead of the model everyone has seen.
Kim456 on Jun 26 '09
good size and placement
hmmm don't like the flower things on the cheeks the shadow under his butt needs to be darker than the contrast on the body....at the moment it is all blending together there creating an odd blob that doesn't read well maybe use the darker shadow colour off the red to fix this looking way better tho.....great use of crit!!! would like your opinion |
Tigerbill on Jun 26 '09
I like the changes to the colours and shading-- much improved!
The suns on the cheeks also look great. You've done a top job on this! I think the outline suits the rice but I really liked the pattern on the sandals and think its a shame to remove it. If you haven't already it would be great if you could vote for my first submission - Tiger-Bat |
Carixpig on Jun 26 '09
Nice work. If you haven't already set your colour limit, then maybe the shadow should be dark yellow, instead of grey. The panda looks a bit pasted on with the grey shadow - it needs to sit on the shirt and cast a shadow onto the yellow fabric. you could use the yellow you have on the bowl and hat.
It might just be the preview, but it looks like you have different lineweights on the sandals to the hat and bowl. I like this image. |

Hopefully, this is the final version!
I only made small changes here. The chopsticks and sandals now have the same line thickness as the rest of the panda. Also, the shadow's color has changed to stand out from the panda better. The shadow is also slightly bumpy now, like the furry parts of the panda. Finally, I noticed the sandals were uneven in length, so that was fixed. Comments and critiques please! Thanks to all who have critiqued so far, the advice has been really helpful! |

can u pls check out my v2? |
Carixpig on Jun 28 '09
Actually I agree with Ekspanzi - you might need some shadow under the hat and bowl.
I'm also a bit uncomfortable witht eh stroke style around the eyes. A bit too smooth and the standard capped ends are really apparent. I wonder if they had some low amplitude roughness they'd integrate better. |

it's a little strange that he's red and sitting in a pool of red. I know it's supposed to be this shadow, but... the stars on the cheeks are a bit strange too.
What if you just made him black and white and put makeup on him to make him look like a geisha? it's a fun idea, just needs a bit more development before I think it will be ready. Good luck. If you have a chance, I'd love a vote for Someone Loved Them Once. One of my entries for the Pre-Loved contest. :D |

Rye-anne on Jun 28 '09
I'm digging this! very nice illustration. Just one nit picky thing you may want to work on is how the panda is gripping the chop sticks. Right now, though I see his claws and all, I'm not really getting that he is holding those lil chop sticks..
Ike Lawliet on Jun 28 '09
Yeah, I noticed the chop-sticks thing myself but figured I'd let if fly, sort of like how Strong-Bad types if you get that reference.
The hat and bowl shadow are good points however, I'll touch those up. I must admit I'm at a bit of a loss as to how improve the shadow, other than maybe curving it. Does anyone have any other ideas? |

More fine detail changes. I added a shadow under his hat and bowl, and stretched his drop shadow a bit to correct for the angle of light. I also took the fuzzy off of the shadow, it wasn't really working. Finally, I noticed his hat had a Hershey's Kiss style point, so I fixed that.
Comments and critiques, please! Again, they've been very helpful, and I'm hoping this time it will be ready for submission! |

a little more work maybe his right face is kinda too sharp and are those clogs supposed to just sticked to his feet |

notoriouskevo on Jun 29 '09
it looks like it needs to be cleaned up a bit.
couple of points mentioned already - the claws are confusing and his sandals need to attach to his feet somehow.
i don't like the colour of the shadow behind him either - looks weird on the blue shirt. at risk of opening up a can of worms here, have you considered putting him in some context - in a japanese room/house or cherry blossom trees or something? |
Ike Lawliet on Jun 29 '09
The shirt is gold, just the preview background is blue, so as to let the design stand out more. I've already considered the issues of holding the chopsticks, but I think I'll let it go as his hand looks too nubby without visible claws, and he could just be pressing them on his body anyway. Sort of like how Strong Bad types.
Also, I have tried a background, but ultimately it only takes away from the Panda himself, especially since I wanted him to be (still) so large on the shirt. I have the sandals held on around his toes, but I can see where the confusion comes in, I'll fix that up. |

Ike Lawliet on Jul 06 '09

elemenopy on Jul 06 '09
It's a little rough. The illustration I mean. I'm not sure the "Japanda" Joke works here: see Asia's comment. Keep working on it.
donlope01 on Jul 06 '09
Nice improvements, I love your panda, the arm is better now and love the backgroud too.
As for the panda claws, on its arm, imo they are not at the right place. I think you shouldn't see the one of the thumb and the other need to be lower on his hand. But it's a detail, good work! Can you vote on my design? |
carpedi on Jul 06 '09
You have a good color scheme going. I agree with elemenopy, I don't understand the title joke because the panda looks Chinese to me.
socialdeviantculture on Jul 06 '09
the illustration is cute, the colors work nicely, and the graphics in the background work well with the design. my only comment would be, the claws on the hand don't look quite right. if the chop sticks are in the paw, it would be wrapped around the sticks, so the claws would not really be visible at all. maybe see how it looks with the claws not on the paw.
Risdiansah on Jul 06 '09
what is the thing behind the japanda's left leg? is it a rock ? the sakura pattern as a background is working i feel. It helps this art look better.
Thanks for your comment on my design :) |
charity.ryan on Jul 06 '09
It's really coming along. nice work. :)I like the background pattern. I agree w/ the above comment about the chopsticks. And I don't like the shadow behind him. The light source seems to be very high left. That shadow wouldn't be sticking out that far. It looks like a tail kind of, not a shadow. I'd tone it down.
if you have a sec |
arthurbath on Jul 06 '09
Hmm. I think that the Japanda joke is allowed to work because it plays words rather than context. Same has having a Bulgarian halibut, far as I'm concerned. If you could play those two words. If the wordplay works, the historical element is unnecessary.
zPlane on Jul 06 '09
This has come a long way when looking at all your subsequent versions! I thoroughly enjoy the design, however I honestly would not have gotten the title had I not read the comments. I think that the previous, less busy forms of the panda's shadow worked better than this current version and I'm not sure how I feel about the claws on the forepaw holding the chopsticks. This is a really great piece! Sometimes adding things just makes stuff too busy and the simple route is best.

shade219 on Jul 13 '09
It feels balanced. The white blossoms on yellow are a nice color choice. Without the claws the hand fits well, and the smaller shadow now looks like a real shadow. The style is consistent and doesn't try to be too cute or too real.
