"Social networking justice" is right on. Here's an Xmas eve story: Back in 'Ought Five, after yet another annual hypnotically hedonistic week at blues camp in the wilds of Washington state's Olympic peninsula, we all - participants and instructors alike - reluctantly dispersed via Big Silver Birds to our respective habitats throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Having been gently deposited by Alaskalines to home in Hell-Lay (Chitown winter finally got to me), I climbed into a four-wheeled chariot for the ride to my beachy bungalow. Just then, my transponder rang (to the melody of a favorite Junior Wells song); on the other end was Farren, breathless over the theft of Lightnin's (no relation to Junior) guitars from a van in downtown Seattle. Two hours later, the Camp Leader (back on the peninsula) had posted a note to our little web site about the abominable act, and our entire group of Weenies (a label with a long story) was crowing about things to do: Send donations to replace the gig tools, call Seattle pawn shops, get pix for the Badged Enforcers, etc.

The following afternoon, we had pix and descriptions of all three hot items, posted and e-blasted to anyone within e-shot (and, yes, craigslist, too). Knowing there was about a 3% chance of recovery, Seattle Weenies hoofed it to music stores and pawn shops with flyers, posted notes on instrument trading sites and oldtime blues fora. And the community's response was overwhelming.

A day passed, and another. On the Third Day, the Workshop Leader (back on the peninsula) posted a note: "the national and the uke have shown up at Palace Jewelry and Loan, and they're holding them for us." There was rejoicing. Cries of "Incredible," "Unbelievable" and one or two of Geo. Carlin's Seven Famous Words populated the web site. We were one and all flush with relief, and with new hope.

Eight days later: "I HAVE LIGHTNIN"S GUITAR!" shouted Orville. He had spoken to musicians at the Pike Place market (Think Maxwell St (R.I.P.), but covered, seven days a week, and everyone has business licenses). One of the musicians had recently bought a black Gibson guitar from a stranger; he wondered whether it might be stolen, but had not yet thought of how to find whoever the original owner might be. Orville reimbursed the gentleman (who was excited about returning the guitar) and heralded the dance of Believe the Unbelievable, preparing to send the guitar back to Lightnin', who lives in the fields of North Carolina.

While your experience may vary, this happy ending happened.. When I lived in Chicago, it was still operating as "The town that works." Chicago's a little different now, and the internet is just starting to make things work. Whatever happens with those elfin sourpusses, good will come of the offer posted. Have a happy Xmas!
