Try a different tee color... I'd suggest any shade of blue or grey.

The style is really similar to Susie Ghahremani's...

e.g. http://www.boygirlparty.com/illustration/17.html

its cute and it's simple, great job!

laughingrat on Dec 31 '06
It's cute, but it was cuter when Susie Ghahremani did it better FIRST. You people should be ashamed of yourselves, ripping off a legitimate one-woman business and selling knockoff designs because you figure you'll get away with it.

This does not look liek a rip off.
mariethebee
mariethebee on Dec 31 '06
really? looks like a rip off to me. that's the first thing I thought when I saw it.
pinklovesbrown
pinklovesbrown on Dec 31 '06
Look at the way the feathers are drawn, the wavy scallops for the wings, the general shape... it's a knock-off of boygirlparty's owls (and it's not nearly as good).
radiostaticstar
radiostaticstar on Dec 31 '06
oh come on, if it were an actual knock off of anything boygirl did then how come you havent posted that example yet, all you've done is show owls that have similar patterns, but not the actual owl that you claim is stolen. if anything agave's owl is cleaner and the linework far and above crisper than that of anything of boygirls...
mariethebee
mariethebee on Dec 31 '06
there are several examples posted as links by *boygirlparty* herself.
cassybot
cassybot on Dec 31 '06
of course the linework on the shirt is cleaner - there's going to be a difference between a vector and a painting on wood. it is quite obvious that her style has been "borrowed" here.

and yet, not one is of the owl in question...

ah, see, I think that you might be misunderstanding the nature of a rip-off vs. a copy or duplicate.

rip-off would be as follows... particularly definition number two:

American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source

rip-off (r?p'ôf', -?f')

n. Slang

1) A product or service that is overpriced or of poor quality.

2) Something, such as a film or story, that is clearly imitative of or based on something else.

3) A theft.

4) An act of exploitation.

What you seem to be thinking of is a COPY, duplicate, exact replication, etc.

alisona7 on Dec 31 '06
i've got to agree with marie...something doesn't need to be an exact copy to be considered a rip off, which i think this shirt clearly is.

The designer ought to stick with his/her origami animals (which are charming) for submissions and avoid poor imitations of other artists' styles.
minorthread
minorthread on Dec 31 '06
and it is a cheap immitation, at that.
agave

wow, i have been drawing these "scalloped" winged animals for a long time...only now did i show them...i'm sorry if anyone feels ripped off, but i assure you that it all came from my own brain, with the influence of etched drawings my lithograph professor showed me while in college, some 10 years ago...

agave: maybe if you posted a link to other works you've done in this style over the years, this debate can be put to rest. The styles, not the image itself, are rather similar.
slughuntersf
slughuntersf on Jan 01 '07
I agree with ivywillow, Agave: Please post some evidence of earlier works as I think this will resolve the issue....this sucks for both parties as the t-shirt does look very similar to boygirlparty's work.

donnamatrix

^ I agree too.

Boygirlparty has a lot of examples of her style, not just online but on merchandise and paintings in homes and galleries. Would be good to see agave's examples.

i would love it if it were a bottom right placement... then it would be perfect!!

OK, I mean this seriously and not sarcastically: I would love this design on a teatowel. It reminds me of homely things. Lovely! (Though I don't think I'd wear it as a t-shirt. Agave, you could do a range of teatowels with this and similar illustrations - I think they would sell!)
