Raid

Having seen the poster and the quality of this design (I had given it a pretty good score prior to seeing the poster), I figured the designer (being you) didn't know about the poster and that the collaborating partner (who, turns out is a 15 year old) was the thief.

Trust me, I dig your designs (I have scored many of them very well), but I can't let this blatant plagiarism slide.

Yes, I have seen movies that were originally books. But, in this case, we're comparing apples to T-Shirts. I don't think it's a valid analogy.

I didn't knowingly copy them from other slogans.

Well actually everyone has heard the expression, "there should be a law against fine print", but I thought it would make a good Type Tee.

But low and behold, 6 of them can be found when googled.

So what does this mean?

I should delete them?
FRICKINAWESOME
   FRICKINAWESOME on Apr 13 '07
no section, if your slogans only remotely touch upon another person's previous thoughts, i don't think that constitutes as a copyright problem. But man, I'm more than little upset at victim's complete wholesale stealing of many of her slogans that i thought were quite good were actually thought up by others. Why would anyone want to put other people's slogans and thoughts up as their own and submit them in such a forum where it's all about what you can best come up with. It's a disservice to yourself and to others. Sad shit, victim...sorry that Raid had to be dragged down in this mess..

The Wee Straggler on Apr 13 '07
I doubt it was her seeing a shirt/bumper sticker somewhere else and thinking "I should submit this to Threadless", but it was probably a case of "I heard this somewhere, It would be cool on a T-shirt", which is equally problematic.

dogladyjoolz
dogladyjoolz on Apr 13 '07
Wow, you guys can get really mean! It makes no difference how old someone is there is no need to be rude and condescending. It is wrong to knowingly steal others work but remember the adage 'nothing is new under the sun' I have seen new and very clever takes on well known / common / popular sayings. (this is not one of them.) If one is going to appropriate the words or ideas of another then it is doubly important that the visuals be of an entirely new slant. In school I think they refered to it as the three degree rule. Three degrees of difference equals appropriation and not plaguerism. None the less it is polite to mention that you have adapted someone else's idea perhaps in the intro blurb (ie. I heard this saying at a party or saw it on a bumper sticker and thought it would make a funny shirt)
fatheed
   fatheed on Apr 13 '07
Yeah. No need for the personal attacks. The creative industry is filled with ideas and designs that have been repeated, improved, borrowed from, ripped off and parodied. I don't think there was really any intent to decieve. God knows I've done stuff in the past and its turned out 100 other people had the same idea - 10 years before I did.

You may or may not be suprised to hear that someone, somewhere has probably thought up each of the printed slogans before they were printed here. Even abstract ones like Shakespeare and Haikus! Most slogans that get printed here are witty or unique phrases or word plays that has been heard by the least number of people! :)

Almost all combination of words can be Googled. It's really hard to turn up 0 results on Google, unless you're searching something absurd. Turning up results on Google does not have anything to do with stealing. If you take a probability theory course, you'll know that the arrival of ideas is a Poisson distribution. Of course, when lambda (the rate of ideas being made) is huge, the likelihood of having the same idea as someone else is high. Lambda must be huge since there are like 6.5 billion people on earth and every second each person thinks of something.

Nonya - you're ridiculous. You're right that all combination of words can be Googled, my point was that googling any of her slogans resulted in many hits with exact or nearly exact hits.

iDanSimpson
iDanSimpson on Apr 13 '07
kaloyster. i agree with your first point (in fact, I adressed that very point about 7 posts above), however, it looks like we are just going to have to disagree on your second point. I do think that plagiarism shouldn't be supported in any way, no matter how well it's done.

This reminds me of all the people on Threadless getting up in arms about stolen designs being places on T-Shirts or websites or what-not... this is just about the same situation, just backwards. IMO just because we don't know the artists/writers doesn't mean we shouldn't stand up for them.
Nonya
Nonya on Apr 13 '07
I hope you believe in math, Mezo. Your artistic career depends on the on the Poisson random distribution to acquit you of this deed.
maija
maija on Apr 13 '07
Ah, the Infinite Number of Monkeys with an Infinite Number of Typewriters Theorem.

Raid's work doesn't deserve a 0 because the slogan passed to him was stolen. Meanwhile, age does have something to do with it because victimofopportunity just learned a hard lesson the easy way, at an early age, one that will hopefully spare her from repeating the mistake in a situation when it would be a lot more critical, like college where it would result in expulsion, or business where it would result in a lawsuit. Of course if the design got printed and the plagiarism was discovered afterwards, that would have been a harder lesson, but it didn't, and so we can all just chill. :P

So what did Carlos Mencia steal? I didn't hear about it.

Supposedly, Mencia (among other routines he does) stole a bit from Bill Cosby about a guy raising his son to be a football player; the man buys him his first football, teaches him to throw the ball, signs him up for a pee wee team, goes to all of his high school and college games, etc., and then when the guy makes it to the pros and scores a touchdown, he turns to the camera and says "Hi Mom!". Mencia has supposedly done the same joke (according to a recent column by Richard Roeper). However in the Cosby version, the dad at the end doesn't really care; he sort of expects it. In the Mencia version, the guy gets pissed and says something like "F*ck that bitch! What about me??"

Then I see 48 commercials a day for the new season of his show and I see diaper wearing astronaut skits and Borat skits. Even if he filmed those when they were relevant can't he realize that it's going to be much later when they're aired.

And that doesn't surprise me at all that he would change the end of that skit like that. Because he has to be "edgy." "I'm Carlos Mencia, I have to cuss on air so they can bleep it, then make fun of race, gender, and the mentally ill. It's a good thing I have these 12 year olds writing my jokes. Because I know I couldn't do it myself"

This is quite a thread! Let's recap:

1) There is no way to know what NSS(i) stands for outside of this sub's title.

2) The phrase "Like we need YOUR support" is not actually sarcastic, thus defeating the shirt's purpose.

3) BUT that's OK since Victim didn't think of that phrase in the first place-- she got it (word for word) from a poster/shirt that already exists.

4) Many phrases when typed into Google will get results, but it can't be a coincidence for so many of Victim's slogans to be on the internet word for word in the same order.

5) Unless the British Crown is bothered, the design itself is good art

not to say that plagiarism is legit or anything, but more to say that the creative process is much more about taking something already in existence (in some way, shape, or form) and making it better. you'll be hard pressed to find a truly original idea these days, believe me.
