About my design

by benjipaffel
This started as a drawing, then a painting and now a t-shirt design. I wanted to submit something to this comp (Threadless loves drawing) that really embraces both digital and manual design together. In the light beams she is slightly more digital and in the shadows she is more "sketchy". (note: the text is not going to be on shirt)

sorta a gross color...

Yeah I know, I LOVE it!!I started designing this for a turqois shirt but tried it on the olive and fell in love with it. I guess I wasn't going for "Ohhh! thats a pretty mermaid" picture. I lot of my other subs are very bright, CMYK stuff. It's time to show some love for Earthy Tones. However if the public demands, I can always do the turqoise version as well.

good concept, but the execution (and colors) could be improved.

Also, it might just be me but I think mermaids with defined ass cheeks look really weird.

Nothing wrong with a little definition of butt! I wanted to have her body transition into the fish tail more than the standard mermaid would. I personally like it more than a... how-would-you-say?... "Little Mermaid" mermaid where the tail starts right at the hips.

One eye is really bulgy?

I think the color is really cool, it's gritty, as if it's a lake or pond or something. Good job.

Thank You!! Gritty, I think is a great description. I knew the colors were a risky choice, but to me, these are the perfect colors for what my vision was. It makes me extremely happy that some people are getting that vision. Blue would have just been to EASY and predictable!

the eyes need a little work...a little distracting.

I can't really tell what the bait is. Is it just a worm? Why is she grabbing for a worm?

Cool idea, though.

her left eye is larger and looks like it's bulging. there's also somethin a little wonky about her left arm, it all looks the same width.

i dig the style though

Stop avoiding it people - the worm looks like a double penis.

I think this could easily be improved but it looks too big for a worm....

That's cool. I'd totally wear this.

I think the style it has been drawn is really nice. Maybe you could improve it without the butt and if you edited the eyes (No offence, but if I ever bought this T-shirt I would be bagged out because of her buttocks showing) Butt apart from that I think it looks really lovely.

And just for clarification. I did draw this with the bait being a worm, but I wanted her to be reaching for it in curiousity... not in hunger. Although I am always ready to let the onlooker interpret the art as they want. I want people to make up their own story of the mermaid. Is she going to help the worm, eat the worm :s , or if you have a unique mind like "Chengui"... well, I won't go there. Isn't that what art is spose to be about, reading a piece as you see it. Maybe that's just my opinion. I do wanna thank EVERYONE who has left a comment. I am very glad this design lasted longer than the first day.

love your style! i think it's cool that you really urge people to interpret your art differently.

I like the colors. It's not quite traditional but I think with that shirt color, it's beautiful...

love it except for the size of the worm.

benjipaffel on Sep 16 '08
Yeah the worm is huge, but I tried it smaller, and it just did not have the same impact. But then again, who knows how big an actual mermaid is????

Two-headed penis alright. Should be drawn again.

The tee-colour makes me kinda sick.. baby blue would make it look a lot better. But I liked the print overall.

And oh, make the worm less yucky:ish, if you know what I mean. It looks like an overweight crossiant at the moment ^^

I like the colors- and the rays coming from above.

The mermaid's heini does look strange and anatomically would not work for her- butts are made to transition into legs that move separately, with a tail, she just doesn't need it.

It does make me wonder- What DO mermaids eat? Are they affected by our plastic bag pollution like the sea turtles and marine mammals?

Ha, really nice use of perspective and rising sun style.
